Only current financial Members are eligible to vote and all 2018 Executive nominations and written notices of issues to be raised in General Business and/or motions for tabling and discussion QAA’s AGM are now called.

Members are reminded to ensure submissions contain detailed information, e.g. detail of costs, benefits etc, for Business case submissions as meeting time is limited.

Fitzpatrick & Co Insurance Brokers – RUN OFF COVER

I’ve closed my business; do I still need insurance cover?

Most Public & Products liability policies only provide cover against liability for damage to property or injury to person where the occurrence (damage/injury) happens during the currency of the policy.  Therefore, any damage/injury that occurs after your policy expires may not be insured, unless you have taken out a replacement policy or run off cover.

If you are a sole trader, partnership or a registered company and you cease to trade you may need to maintain liability cover for goods or services that you provided in the past against any claim that may arise in the future. This cover is called Run Off cover and is available to ensure protection against future liabilities even though the business has ceased trading.

We strongly recommend that you arrange Run Off Cover, especially if you’re a sole trader or partnership or the company continues to exist and has ongoing net assets.  The last thing you want in your retirement or when no longer working for yourself is a large bill that a liability policy would have responded to if an incident has occurred.

Fitzpatrick Insurance Brokers – Tools of the Trade

I have a liability policy, does this cover my Tools.  No!

Tools of Trade cover is a separate policy that provides in most policies Australia Wide cover for all your Tools.  Insurers don’t need an individual list of items but will need a value for them, and some may require you to specify items if they are over a certain value, around $2500 depending on the value of the item.

If any of your Tools got stolen can your business still run?  Or if your entire toolbox was stolen how much would it cost you to replace all of them items in it, including many of the items that you have built up over many years.  Tools of Trade cover can provide cover for these items and not leave you out of pocket or unable to work without these items.

It is important to check your policy on a Tools of Trade policy as sometimes the cover can be limited by either location, or theft exclusions.  For example if a Tool was stolen from a non locked vehicle, toolbox, shed or back of a ute, it may not be covered depending on the insurer.

Can you afford to run your business without your tools?  Or will the small cost of Tools of Trade insurance provide adequate protection to keep you running in a frustrating time when your tools have been stolen.

Workshop: Tree Mapping Technologies for Urban Forest Management

This half-day, interactive and educational workshops will demonstrate how to map, assess, analyse, and manage urban tree data online, on any device, from anywhere.

Agenda* for Workshop:
Tree Mapping Technologies for Urban Forest Management

8:30am -9am: Network over coffee & tea

9am-10am: Attendees will learn tree inventory best practices and efficiencies from professionals. This portion of the workshop will be indoors and introduce participants to tree inventory data collection using GPS vs. GIS methods, online and offline modes, map tools, browser & web services technology, and training on data management on a desktop, tablet, or smartphone.

10am-11am: The second section will be held outdoors, where participants will learn to access, navigate, view, edit, add, and manage tree data on the cloud from a smartphone or tablet devices and see data updates in real-time. Offline (disconnected) data collection and syncing when on WIFI will also be introduced. Attendees are encouraged to bring a web-enabled device or pair up with someone. Participants will learn how to map tree X/Y coordinates without using GPS, to select a base map with varying conditions and ways to deal with sunlight issues on mobile screens.

11am-12pm: The workshop will conclude indoors, where we analyze the newly collected data, perform spatial and attribute queries, export data to Excel and GIS formats, and create custom data-driven reports and maps. Advanced tools will be introduced, time permitting, such as viewing i-Tree benefits, Tree Protection Zones, tree appraisal values (based on CTLA), work order tracking/automation, and ISA TRAQ forms/fields. The course will wrap-up with a Q&A discussion and list of resources.

12pm-1pm: Network and discussion over catered lunch.

Ian Hanou – Founder and CEO
Ian started Plan-It Geo in 2012 after 11 years of private industry consulting in Colorado. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Forest Management with a minor in GIS/Remote Sensing from Colorado State University.

Ian has managed or contributed to complex geospatial projects involving urban forestry, green infrastructure planning, water supply & water conservation analysis, energy assurance planning, wildfire risk assessment, forest health monitoring, and stormwater financing/utility planning. In 2011, the Society of Municipal Arborists presented Ian with an Award of Achievement.

 

Ben Kenyon – Principle Consulting Arborist and Director


Ben has over 20 years experience in the arboricultural industry in both the field and consultancy and is an expert in all aspects of tree management.

As the Principal Consulting Arborist at Homewood Consulting, Ben has a strong practical focus and is passionate about training and public consultation. Given his practical background, he has extensive experience in the preparation of arborist reports, tree management plans and tree retention assessments for planning and development.

Ready for Tax Time

We know it’s a busy time of year.

Here are some tips to help you get ready to lodge your tax return:

  • Gather and sort your business records now, including cash, online, EFTPOS, bank statements, credit or debit card transactions covering:
    • sales and other business income
    • expenses you can claim as a business deduction such as staff wages, contractor expenses, operating expenses and business travel expenses.
  • If you changed your record keeping software during the year, check that all your information has transferred over correctly.

Are you a sole trader?

  • Even if your income is below the tax-free threshold, you still need to lodge a tax return.
  • Do you pay PAYG instalments? Lodge your activity statements and pay all your PAYG instalments before you lodge your tax return so your income tax assessment takes into account the instalments you’ve paid through the year.
