Event Details
Janet McDonald has been working with the Department of Agriculture, Forest Health Surveillance (FHS) team since 1998 conducting pests and disease surveys in forestry plantations throughout Queensland. Janet was part of the team of researchers who set up FHS systems in the South Pacific Islands and most recently in south-east Asia. She was responsible for establishing FHS systems in the sandalwood plantations in the Ord River Irrigation Area near Kununurra WA. After twenty years of experience conducting pest and disease surveys and collecting samples in the field, Janet is now looking forward to sharing her knowledge with industry professionals.
“Quite often the agent causing the problem will have been and gone but it’s the symptoms they leave behind that are important.”
“Damage to a tree can be occurring underground but the symptoms are showing above ground. You just need to know how to recognise them”.
“Simple techniques can be used in the field, for example, knowing the difference between chlorosis caused by toxicity or nutritional disorder”.
- Types of damage:
- Leaf chewing
- Gall-forming – insect & fungal
- Sap-sucking
- Leaf tying
- Stem/branch boring
- Leaf pathogens
- Cankers
- Root pathogens
- Nutritional disorders
- Exotic/biosecurity agents
Field identification – “Some types of damage are specific to a particular agent which makes the problem identifiable in the field”
Field sample collection techniques and photography – “You could have the best sample in the field but if it’s not collected correctly it’s useless for identification”
Field equipment hygiene – “It’s important to practice field hygiene so that you’re not spreading the problem”

Event Details
BRISBANE – 26-40 Delancey Street, Cleveland, Brisbane QLD
COURSE CONTENT
TREE BIOLOGY AND MECHANICS:
Participants will learn how to assess wood structure, decay and tree mechanics, and evaluate their impact on the likelihood of tree or tree part failure. Participants will also learn how to identify and assess defects and conditions that may affect the likelihood of failure.
TREE INSPECTION AND ASSESSMENT:
Participants will learn about types of targets, assess the likelihood of a tree or tree part impacting a target, and estimate the consequences of tree or tree part failure. Participants will also learn how to assess site factors that may influence the likelihood of failure.
DATA ANALYSIS AND RISK CATEGORISATION:
After learning the tree and target factors that must be assessed, participants will combine likelihood of failure, the likelihood of impact, and consequences of failure to derive a risk rating. This rating helps the assessor communicate tree risk to clients and risk managers, and allows comparison of risk levels between trees.
RISK REPORTING:
Participants will learn skills for clearly communicating tree risk to clients, both in written and verbal reports. Participants will also learn about the key components that should be included in a report after completing a tree risk assessment.
FURTHER INFORMATION
The ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) program provides an opportunity for professionals in the arboriculture industry to expand their knowledge through education and training in the fundamentals of tree risk assessment. This qualification promotes the safety of people and property by providing a standardized and systematic process for assessing tree risk. The results of a tree risk assessment can provide tree owners and risk managers with the information to make informed decisions to enhance tree benefits, health, and longevity.
The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification Course is a two-day educational course followed by a 1/2 day assessment that includes both a written and field component. The course prepares the participant to take the TRAQ assessment to become ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. It is required that you attend the course and successfully complete the assessment in order to receive the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification.
The course cost includes all course materials, lunch, and refreshments on both training days and welcome refreshments upon arrival for the exam.
The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification is valid for five (5) years from the date the TRAQ exam is passed. The qualification holder is required to retake the course and pass the exam every five (5) years in order to maintain the qualification.
PREREQUISITES
To earn a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification you must hold or have held one of the following prerequisites (This is a modified list for the Australian Market, please contact the QAA office if you hold a credential not listed below for further information and assessment):

ALL ATTENDEES MUST HOLD A CURRENT CHAINSAW QUALIFICATION
Shane is a Eumundi based artist who uses chainsaws and traditional carving techniques to make nature inspired sculptures.
His mentor was Bundaberg’s late Arthur Nobby Clark, who passed away in March 2017 and was best known for his Denizens of the Deep.
Shane’s largest sculpture stands more than 2m in height and his smallest is relief carving which is suitable for wall hanging.
He started carving with chisels and progressed to Arbortech carving discs on grinders, and in the last year he has started using more chainsaws, to create larger sculptures.
In this workshop you will learn the art of Chainsaw Carving!
Shane’s teaching approach is to repeat 3-4 basic techniques, over and over, the fundamentals to sculpting in 3D, and questions and answers as you go.
Students must bring their own saw/s, logs and PPE. 2 x Logs of camphor or softwood of choice. 350-400mm diameter and 1200-1500 tall. (One log is a spare)
Morning tea provided
Any small bar chainsaw is good, standard chain and bar are good.
