The Workshop

During this workshop the presenters will examine multiple rescue types and scenarios, based on the system outlined in Minimum Industry Standard MIS304 Aerial Rescue. They will also provide information to competitive climbers on how to achieve the most possible points in the Aerial Rescue event.

Topics being covered include: 

    • Applying the S.A.I.D.A.I.R.L.T method
    • Emergency preparations
    • Assessing emergency situations and responding to an aerial emergency
    • Assessing a casualties injuries and/or integrity of casualties climbing system
    • Methods for accessing a tree to perform an aerial rescue
    • Lowering a casualty to the ground and handing over to emergency services

There will also be a demonstration of:

  1. Basic assisted rescue
  2. Complex transfer rescue – lateral to the stem
  3. Pick-off rescue

After completing this workshop, attendees will: 

  • know the importance of WHS/emergency procedures and the best course of action if an aerial rescue is required
  • be able to identify site and tree hazards
  • find efficient methods of accessing the tree
  • confidently assess injuries and integrity of climbing systems
  • choose the most appropriate rescue method.

Candidates should also be able to competently perform an aerial rescue of an injured or stuck climber from the canopy of a tree using several methods.

 

Who should attend?

This workshop is aimed at competent climbers who can access trees using a range of methods. It is suited to climbing/competition arborists wanting to refresh or update their aerial rescue skills and knowledge.

This workshop is 100% outdoors and includes an attendee participation session.  

 

What to bring?

In order to get the most out of the day, attendees should bring the following to the workshop:

  • Water
  • Lunch
  • Snacks
  • All their regular climbing equipment including harnesses, ropes, and PPE

 

The Presenter

Craig Reid is an experienced consultant and trainer. He has more than 20 year’s worth of industry experience, including 10 as an arboriculture trainer.

He was the Owner/Operator of Surf City Tree Services for 15 years and is the current Director/Principal consultant at The Tree Advisory Centre. 

Craig began his training career at TAFE QLD Gold Coast in 2012 and today is the CEO at the Australian Institute of Arboriculture.

Craig’s goal for this workshop is to provide quality, current best practice arboriculture training that will help support improved workplace safety and WHS practices across the industry.

Jamie Boston

Jamie is the owner of Boston Tree Care Pty Ltd in Brisbane.

An avid competitive climber, Jamie has claimed victories and placings in various tree climbing competitions throughout the world, including overall male champion at QTCC 2022. He is also the reigning Asia Pacific Tree Climbing Champion.
