The Registered User training begins at 9am and finishes at 5pm. DO NOT BOOK A PLACE IF YOU CAN NOT COMMIT TO THESE TIMES. Attendees who do not attend the full training will not become a Registered User of QTRA and no refunds will be made by us as a result of your failure to attend the full training.

QTRA requires payment of an annual User Registration fee. The first year’s fee, currently $165 AUD, is included in the above cost. User registration renewals are discounted substantially for organisations with multiple users.

QTRA and Visual Tree Assessment – Estimating Probability of Failure training have now been combined into one, two-day workshop.

 

QTRA Update training:

The first day or first and second day, if required, can be attended at a discounted cost by existing QTRA Users who need to get up-to-date with the current version (V5) of the QTRA method. The training provides a refresher for those who have previously attended the QTRA Training and will update you with all of the changes that have been made from September 2013 onwards.

In order to book onto this event, you must agree to the terms of the QTRA User Licence. If you have not already done so you will be asked to indicate your agreement during the booking process.

The focus of this day is to introduce the conditions and requirements involved for ISA Tree Climbing Events. While winners will not qualify for nationals at this event, they will gain the knowledge and experience required to participate in the Queensland Tree Climbing Championship (QTCC).

Don’t forget we are there to have a lot of fun with some great prizes up for grabs.

All levels of climbers welcome, there is something for everyone.

During this workshop you will get an overview of essential aspects and approaches to professional tree assessment. The workshop will be delivered via three progressive sessions, each 2 hours in duration. 

Session 1: Overview of Tree Structure and Function

    • What is a tree?
    • Monocots and eudicots
    • Primary and secondary growth
    • Main organs
    • Structure of phloem, xylem, cambium, and their integrated function
    • Absorption
    • Translocation and transpiration
    • Photosynthesis
    • Respiration

Session 2: Overview of Tree Nomenclature and Taxonomy

This workshop is 60% classroom-based, centred on illustrated slide presentations that encourage discussion and interaction, plus 40% outdoors. 

The Presenter

Bryan Gould has enjoyed a lengthy career in tree care and management having worked as a climber, supervisor, manager, consultant, and AQF teacher/trainer. He has extensive experience in commercial tree care, arboreta and collection curation, municipal urban forest management and AQF L3/4/5/6 arboriculture education.

Bryan is a Senior Parks Project Officer with Gold Coast City Council and is the Principal of ARB101 who provide arboriculture advocacy, consultancy, and education. He holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Management, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Science Horticulture, a Bachelors Degree in Arboriculture, and is TRAQ qualified.

Bryan’s goal for his series of workshops is to cover issues of interest, providing relevant information and insight on arboriculture topics, that support arborists to better understand aspects of arboricultural/ biological/environmental and commercial management.

During this workshop you will get an overview of how biological/chemical/dynamic/mechanical responses are initiated. The workshop, which will be delivered across one day comprising four 1.5-hour sessions, will provide an understanding how trees deal with biotic/abiotic affects/impacts.

Session 1: CODIT – immediate and ongoing responses/impacts

    • A wound response mechanism
    • A two-part reaction
    • Biological, chemical, and morphological changes within the tree

Session 2: Adaptation – continuing growth

    • Adaptation – or decline and failure
    • Continuous/ongoing growth

Session 3: Canopy – aboveground loads and dynamics

    • Static and dynamic loads
    • Damping

Session 4: Roots – belowground impacts/influences on rootzone/rhizosphere

The Presenter

Bryan Gould has enjoyed a lengthy career in tree care and management having worked as a climber, supervisor, manager, consultant, and AQF teacher/trainer. He has extensive experience in commercial tree care, arboreta and collection curation, municipal urban forest management and AQF L3/4/5/6 arboriculture education.

Bryan is a Senior Parks Project Officer with Gold Coast City Council and is the Principal of ARB101 who provide arboriculture advocacy, consultancy, and education. He holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Management, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Science Horticulture, a Bachelors Degree in Arboriculture, and is TRAQ qualified.

Bryan’s goal for his series of workshops is to cover issues of interest, providing relevant information and insight on arboriculture topics, that support arborists to better understand aspects of arboricultural/ biological/environmental and commercial management.

The Workshop

During this workshop you will get an understanding of the biological/environmental/societal benefits/values of trees and the arboriculture/landscape principles for establishing them at scale. The workshop will be delivered across one day comprising three 2-hour sessions. 

Session 1: The role of the arborist

    • As a ‘visionary’
    • As a ‘landscape manager’

Session 2: The benefits and values of trees

    • Aesthetic values
    • Climatological effects
    • Ecological issues
    • Environmental factors
    • Economic influences
    • Social benefits

Session 3: The process of vegetation establishment

    • The scope of site assessment/analysis issues
      • Aerial and in-ground factors
    • Site assessment/analysis and preparation
      • Earth moving/contouring
      • Drainage/irrigation
      • Soil amendment/amelioration
      • Pre-planting weed suppression

After completing this workshop, attendees will be familiar with their role and relationship to other professionals, the varied benefits/values of trees, and the range of issues involved when planning and preparing sites for planting.

The Workshop

During this workshop you will get an overview of how to apply a robust process for selecting trees for managing in urban locations. The workshop will be delivered across one day comprising four 1.5-hour sessions. 

Session 1: Trees as key landscape components

    • Criteria for selection

Session 2: Design requirements

    • Factors relating to physical attributes that enrich the urban landscape

Session 3: Biological tolerances

    • Factors that prescribe the tree’s inherent potential to succeed

Session 4: Functional characteristics

    • Factors that enhance the tree’s potential for survival

After completing this workshop, attendees will be familiar with the criteria of a meaningful tree selection process and understand how urban treescapes can be enhanced by using species that offer durable function and performance.
