What Is the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ)?

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) offers TRAQ as an instructor-led credential that demonstrates professional knowledge in tree risk assessment through participation in a training course and passing its accompanying exam. The TRAQ program offers tree care professionals the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the fundamentals of tree risk assessment by learning a standardized, systematic process for assessing tree risk and providing information to tree owners and risk managers for making informed decisions that will promote the safety of people and property and enhance tree benefits, health, and longevity.

COURSE CONTENT

The course content is based on ISA’s Tree Risk Assessment Manual and is divided into nine modules:

1.   Introduction to Tree Risk Assessment
2.   Levels of Assessment
3.   Target Assessment
4.   Site Assessment
5.   Tree Biology and Mechanics
6.   Tree Inspection and Assessment
7.   Data Analysis and Risk Categorization
8.   Mitigation
9.   Reporting

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for ISA Certification Holders 

If you hold an ISA certification, you can earn 14.5 ISA CEUs if you complete the ISA Tree Risk Assessment course, attending at least 80 percent of the instructional portion of the program. These CEUs can be applied to your ISA Certified Arborist® credential, including the Tree Worker credentials. For an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist®, 6 CEUs go to practice, 6 to management, and 2.5 to science.

What Are the Course Objectives?

•   Comprehension of the fundamentals of limited-visual and basic tree risk assessment as defined in the ISA Best Management Practices: Tree Risk Assessment;
•   Knowledge of the principles of advanced diagnostic techniques for assessing tree risk;
•   Mastery of methods for gathering and evaluating information to assess tree risk;
•   Development of reasoned judgments and recommendations for mitigating identified risk.

How Are the TRAQ Course and Exam Presented?

The standard ISA TRAQ course is a two-day, in-person training course followed by a half-day examination. (Instructors may extend the time/length of the course in specific circumstances.) Lectures, discussions, small-group activities, applied case studies, and field activities are all a part of the training process. The examination consists of two parts:

• Written exam: 100 multiple-choice questions. Each question has four answer choices, and only one is correct. You will have two hours to complete the written exam.
• Performance-based exam: An actual, outdoor tree assessment will test your ability to apply tree risk principles to a tree at the training site. You will have one hour to complete the performance-based exam.

Who Is Eligible to Apply for the TRAQ Course?

An eligible applicant for a TRAQ course must have earned at least one of the following credentials:

  • ISA Board Certified Master Arborist®
  • ISA Certified Arborist®
  • ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified
  • A degree in Arboriculture, urban forestry, traditional forestry, or horticulture that is part of a national qualifications framework or is from a college or university that is accredited or recognized under a system that is substantially similar to accreditation.
  • AHC30810 Certificate III in Arboriculture (Australia)
  • European Tree Technician
  • European Tree Worker
  • New Zealand National Certificate in Horticulture (Arboriculture) (Level 4)
  • United Kingdom Qualifications and Credit Framework Level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Arboriculture

ISA maintains records of its own credential holders; however, ISA credentials that expired in 2001 or earlier may require documentation. Applicants must provide valid documentation of any other credentials to demonstrate eligibility. For a full list of credentials, please refer to the application guide. If you hold a credential or have completed a program of study not listed above, go to the ISA website for information on eligibility appeals. You will be required to send a scanned PDF copy of your qualification certificate or academic transcript to office@qaa.net.au or via the document uploading section on the website TRAQ registration page.

The course cost includes all course materials, lunch, and refreshments on both training days and welcome refreshments upon arrival for the exam.

The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification is valid for five (5) years from the date the TRAQ exam is passed. The qualification holder is required to retake the course and pass the exam every five (5) years in order to maintain the qualification.

ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) Re-Certification

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Class Size is Limited to 20 each session

 

The TRAQ Re-Certification Course is a one-day refresher, with five hours of instruction, and three hours to take the exam. Current TRAQ holders can complete the course as early as three and one-half (3 1/2) years into their Qualification (18 months before your expiration date).  

Once you have successfully passed the renewal requirements, you will be given 5 years from the date of your previous expiration allowing you to take full advantage of the 5 year period granted with the credential.

Your instructor for this event will be Mark Roberts.

You will review:

   –   Tree biology and mechanics
   –  Tree inspection and assessment
   –   Data analysis and risk categorisation

Eligibility:
To be able to register for the TRAQ Re-Certification workshop you must hold a TRAQ credential. You may complete the TRAQ Renewal workshop as early as 18 months prior to your qualification expiration date. Participants are asked to bring their TRAQ Risk Assessment manual and clipboard to training. 

All Applications will be reviewed for approval. Your registration will be finalised via email.

Once your current expiration date passes, you will need to retake the full course and assessment to be reinstated.

Confirmation Packet:
You will receive a confirmation packet with a letter containing the date and time of the course and the name of the appropriate contact person. Confirmation packets are shipped three weeks prior to the date the course begins.

Confirmation packets will be shipped using UPS to the address provided on the personal information registration page. Please provide a physical shipping address.

What is required to bring to the class:
 – your government-issued photo ID
 – your TRAQ Manual (shipped via UPS to the address you provide)
 – your TRAQ Workbook (will be handed out at the class)
 – your hard hat and high visibility vest or shirt (required)
 – #2 pencils and clipboard for taking notes and completing worksheets
 – rain gear, including a large ziplock bag (just in case!)
 – come prepared to spend part of the day outdoors
 – please dress for your comfort level indoors and outdoors; 
    we cannot always control the room temperature to suit everyone 

Special Testing Accommodations Requests:

Introduction to Soil Science

When: Tuesday 22nd October 2019

Workshop Outline:

In this workshop, led by a mycorrhizal specialist and soil biologist, Katia will introduce some general/technical knowledge enabling attendees to understand soil analysis, as well as comprehending soil fauna roles (both the good and bad). New tendencies and technologies for soil care will be discussed. You will learn basic soil science: soil physics (structure, texture, compaction), soil chemistry (pH, nutrients and nutrient cycling), and soil biology, as well as simple tests you can do on your own soil samples. With these foundations, we will discuss soil improvers and many practical how-to’s, including: 

  • Composts and compost teas
  • pH changers
  • Mulches
  • Microlife,macrolifeand soil beneficials 
  • Organic Materials
  • Improving structure and texture

About the Presenter:

Katia Plouznikoff is a soil biologist specialised in soil microbiology applied to agronomy. She works as an agronomist for Costa Avocados and has a fondness for mycorrhiza and plant biotechnologies. She has worked on several research projects aiming to sustainably improve crop cultures with the help of beneficial soil microorganisms. Thus Katia has spent long hours over a microscope looking at such microorganisms living in the rhizosphere, but what she likes the most is to inspect sites armed with her favorite tools such as: penetrometers, auger, moisture probes, pH probes, EC probes and Brix refractometers to conduct soil investigations for tree surgery, assessing tree and soil conditions, and performing soil sampling to establish soil chemical and physical profiles.

As an agronomist Katia carries out plant tissue analyses to investigate poisoning, contamination and nutrient deficiencies. Interpretation of soil tests and analyses combined with literature research allowed her to previously develop and implement biotechnologies for plant health care treatments such as microbial brewed compost and active mycorrhizal inoculum.

Katia is willing to share her knowledge to increase tree survival rates and promote a better tree management with sustainable organic practices to help make our environment greener.

ArborCamp™ Invitation for Market Stallholders

We are excited to announce that we will be holding Arbor Camp™ in 2019. As supporters of our industry, we are personally inviting you to be a part of this event. This year the event is to be held over three days on 20th, 21st and 22nd of September at Rocky Creek Scout Camp – 3246 Old Gympie Road, Beerwah, Queensland 4519.

We are hoping to attract a wide range of spectators to this event and of course the arboriculture community. We are promoting a family orientated event, with our main objective to educate people within our industry. Your support and products you supply are a huge importance in being a part of this.  We ask that if you wish to accept our invitation to this year’s ArborCamp™, that you please complete the attached form, this ensures we designate you with space within the market stall area.

We will be asking all vendors to arrive on Thursday the 19th September to start the bump in, as we are wanting everything placed prior to the gates opening on Friday the 20th September. Upon Arrival you will need to locate Ben Inman or Tanya Johns who will direct you to your site and assist with any set up enquiries.

As a stall holder, we are offering you a 3 x 3 site* with a cost of $50 per site (keeping in line with current Market Stall prices). This money will need to be paid no later than 19th September 2019 to secure your spot.

In the weeks leading up to ArborCamp™, we will be promoting our sponsors and their businesses, please advise if there are any event specials or special merchandise you will be including at this Event. This will help us get the word out on what you are offering and hopefully make your site a draw card for attendees. Power on site is very limited, so please supply your own generator and tagged power cords if required.

Discussion on Tree Health & Soil Health relationships

Mathew Daniel is a leading internationally experienced Plant Health Care Arborist. With a demonstrated history of working in the environmental services industry and skilled in Soil and Plant Science, Sustainable Development, Advanced Compost Production, Natural Resource Management, and Environmental Awareness, Matthew is leading a developing Plant Health Care Industry.

Matthew has a diverse background with Arboriculture roots. A scholarship arborist of 23 years, with 3 years of PHC experience in Boston, USA. and over a decade of developing soil and plant health methodology based on measurable parameters and specialising in soil microbiology, Matthew is now working collaboratively on international research projects with colleagues at Michigan State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Matthew can deliver a detailed and practical working adaptation of the essential relationship between soil health and plant health and the application of new state of the art environmental sensors and web-based platforms.

Come listen to Matthew and learn about the new – Swinburne Uni  – School of Plant/ Soil Health and Environmental Sensing Technologies and talk about some of his latest projects, at this year’s QAA Arbor Camp!

Optimal tree and soil health can be achieved by applying a unique data collection method and approach in order to understand soil health parameters that are fundamental to plant health.

By approaching environmental assessment through a process of measuring complex plant and soil relationships between photosynthesis, soil biology, chemistry and physical structure a more accurate and sustainable understanding and management of natural assets can be achieved.

Armed with an elaborate collection of site sourced laboratory information, and environmental measures and sensor data, Matthew can develop remediation and maintenance programs based on natural processes to reduce decline and return the plant to an optimum level of vigor.

Janet will be presenting her Pest and Disease Damage & Symptom Recognition Workshop.

Janet McDonald has been working with the Department of Agriculture, Forest Health Surveillance (FHS) team since 1998 conducting pests and disease surveys in forestry plantations throughout Queensland. Janet was part of the team of researchers who set up FHS systems in the South Pacific Islands and most recently in south-east Asia. She was responsible for establishing FHS systems in the sandalwood plantations in the Ord River Irrigation Area near Kununurra WA. After twenty years of experience conducting pest and disease surveys and collecting samples in the field, Janet is now looking forward to sharing her knowledge with industry professionals.

“Quite often the agent causing the problem will have been and gone but it’s the symptoms they leave behind that are important.”
